Estimates of Red Army deaths during WWII range from 8 million to well over 20 million. The apocalyptic toll continues to loom large in the Russian collective identity. In the 80 years following the capture of Berlin, one of the most symbolic moments on the Eastern Front, Soviet veterans have penned dozens of memoirs. Some celebrate the Soviet cause while others condemn it. This paper, completed for an undergraduate independent study, analyzes the spectrum of Soviet-ideology in post war Red Army memoirs and places them in the context of where and when they were written in relation to the history of the USSR.
